Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Parabens
Parabens are used as inhibitors of microbial growth to extend the shelf life of products. Studies have shown that parabens are absorbed through the skin and have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Parabens are still widely used even though they are known to be toxic.
Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
Sodium Lauryl and Laureth Sulfate are harsh detergents used for their cleansing and foam-building properties. It causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions.
Petrolatum
Petrolatum also known as petroleum jelly, is a mineral oil derivative used for its emollient properties in cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. It often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate.
Propylene Glycol
Propylene Glycol is a synthetic petrochemical mix of vegetable glycerin and alcohol used as a humectant in cosmetic products. Propylene Glycol has been known to cause allergic reactions, hives and eczema.
PVP/VA Copolymer
PVP/VA Copolymer is a petroleum-derived chemical used in cosmetics. PVP/VA Copolymer can be considered toxic, since inhaled particles can damage the lungs.
Synthetic Colors
Synthetic Colors are used to make cosmetics "pretty" and should be avoided at all costs. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Many synthetic colors can be carcinogenic. If a cosmetic contains them, don't use it.
